Staff Picks: Our Favorite Theater Characters
Serving pies, stealing the spotlight or causing supernatural mayhem
Sometimes, it's not the heroes we remember at all, but the unlikely characters who live rent-free in your head long after the curtain call. We asked the Theatreland team which stage character they love the most - who's yours?
Staff Pick Their Favorite Theatre Character
Kevin - Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd)
Did you come here for a pie, sir?
Baker, businesswoman, walking red flag, Mrs. Lovett is one of musical theatre's most entertaining and layered creations. With her quick wit, questionable morals, and a dream of seaside living, she somehow manages to steal every scene she's in.
"She is just absolute unhinged chaos. Every time she walks on stage, you know you're about to have a great time." - Kevin (Writer & Event Creator)
Scarlet - Timon & Pumbaa (The Lion King)
Every great story can benefit from a comedy duo, and nobody brings a bit of lightness to the savannah better than this meerkat and warthog bestie pair. From their first appearance, they're responsible for some of The Lion King's funniest moments. With their carefree outlook and constant bickering, they remind us that no matter how bad things get, you can always remember the ultimate mantra - Hakuna Matata (no worries!)
"I know it's technically cheating to pick two characters, but I love Timon and Pumbaa. They're hilarious and don't take themselves too seriously, and Hakuna Matata' always puts me in a good mood. We can all take a leaf out of their book!" - Scarlet (Marketing Manager)
Daniel - Beetlejuice (Beetlejuice)
Beetlejuice is a chaotic, fast-talking trickster who thrives on disruption and attention - the theatrical equivalent of a double espresso. The self-proclaimed 'ghost with the most' crashes through the fourth wall and leaves audiences laughing from start to finish, existing less as a traditional antagonist or helper and more as a force of manipulation who bends situations to serve his own entertainment and self-interest.
"He's completely ridiculous, and that's why I love him. Beetlejuice gets away with things no other character could." - Daniel (Writer & Event Creator)
